Abstract :

The creative project “Portrait of Frédéric Chopin (Nocturne Version) and The Letter of Love” explores the intersection of music and visual art through digital illustration, aiming to enhance the aesthetic atmosphere of the College of Music hall at Rangsit University. The first is done in a surreal art style, while the second is in a modern style.” The project focuses on interpreting the emotional depth and lyrical beauty of Chopin’s Nocturne in E-flat Major, Op. 9, No. 2 into a visual form that reflects his sensitivity, poetic elegance, and introspective mood.

The process begins with detailed research on Chopin’s life, musical style, and the expressive qualities of the nocturne.  These insights are translated into preliminary sketches, visual concepts, and compositional plans. Digital illustration tools, including Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop, are employed to draw, layer, and refine the elements, applying color harmonies, gradients, and textures to evoke the serene, nocturnal atmosphere of the piece. The flowing lines, tonal contrasts, and a rhythm of light an color are designed to mirror the melodic phrasing and emotional contour of Chopin’s music.

The first illustration integrates realism and abstraction, transforming auditory emotion into visual expression. Beyond decoration, the artwork serves as an educational and inspirational element, inviting viewers to experience Chopin’s music through sight and imagination. By bridging the sensory worlds of sound and vision, the project exemplifies the potential of interdisciplinary art to communicate emotion, enhance spatial aesthetics, and foster appreciation for classical music.

The second illustration is created in a modern style to engage and inspire young music students. By using clean lines, vibrant colors of the night, and contemporary design elements, the illustration aims to connect with the visual preferences of younger learners. This stylistic choice helps make the subject matter more appealing, enhances their emotional connection to the music, and encourages a more immersive learning experience.

Ultimately, “Portrait of Frédéric Chopin (Nocturne Version)” demonstrates how digital illustration can convey musical expression, transform a physical space into an inspiring environment, and create a lasting dialogue between visual art and music, contributing to both aesthetic enrichment and creative learning.

  8. To enhance the aesthetic atmosphere of the College of Music hall at Rangsit University.

Conceptual Framework :

“Portrait of Frédéric Chopin (Nocturne Version)” is a digital illustration inspired by the lyrical beauty and emotional depth of Chopin’s Nocturne in E-flat Major, Op. 9, No. 2. The artwork reinterprets the delicate, romantic, and introspective qualities of the music through a visual composition that blends realism and abstraction. Flowing lines, soft gradients, and luminous tones of deep blue, silver, and warm gold reflect the serene atmosphere of night and the gentle rhythm of Chopin’s piano melodies.

The portrait presents Chopin as a poetic symbol of sound and emotion, capturing his inner sensitivity and creative spirit. Through digital layering and rhythmic visual design, the work transforms musical expression into visual harmony. Created to enhance the aesthetic atmosphere of the College of Music hall at Rangsit University, the artwork invites viewers to experience the intimate dialogue between music, emotion, and visual imagination.

Process / Methodology :

1. Research and Analysis

  • Study Frédéric Chopin’s life and his personality.
  • Study the emotional and musical characteristics of ‘The Nocturne’. Analyze the mood, rhythm, dynamics, and tonal quality of the piece to extract key emotional elements such as tenderness, melancholy, lyricism, and serenity.
  • Study Surrealist art focusing on the painting of Salvador Fellip Jacint Dalí in the late Renaissance. By using a desert landscape as the background, the design gains a sense of endless space, enhancing the feeling of a grand, expansive artwork.

2. Concept Development

2. 1 Translate musical analysis into visual ideas, deciding on the color scheme and mood that reflect the nocturne’s atmosphere.

  • Mauve or Lavender adds a gentle, dreamy tone of affection.
  • Willow Gray provide gentle
  • Pale Mint provides calm and balance, echoing the nocturne’s gentle ebb and flow – Midnight –
  • Blue reflects the “night” aspect of the nocturne and its quiet introspective mood.
  • Champagne Gold for luxury and grace.
  • Gold (#E6BE8A) graceful and romantic.

2.2 Sketch preliminary concepts emphasizing flowing lines, composition, rhythmic movement, to convey musical expression visually.

2.3 Decide on symbolic elements, such as a music note sheet, piano, snowflake, chandelier, and chandelier to enhance emotional depth.

  • The sheet music of Nocturne in E-flat Major, Op. 9 represents the piece composed by Frédéric Chopin.
  • The image of the piano represents the instrument used to perform ‘The Nocturne’.
  • The snowflake represents uniqueness, beauty, grace, tender and sincerity
  • The chandelier represents elegance and sophistication, serving as a visual metaphor for the refined aesthetic and emotional depth of classical music.
  • The rose image represents love, passion, beauty, romance, and emotion.

3. Digital Illustration Creation

3.1 Use Adobe Illustrator to digitally draw all elements based on the preliminary sketch.

3.2 Use Adobe Photoshop to layer the drawn elements and refine the overall composition.

3.3 Use Adobe Photoshop to apply color harmonies, gradients, and textures, evoking the nocturnal and reflective mood of Chopin’s Nocturne, while adjusting tonal balance to align with the rhythm and emotional flow of the music.

4. Refinement and detailing
4.1 Add fine details to the portrait and background to enhance visual interest and depth.
4.2 Ensure the visual “melody” of the illustration reflects the musical piece.

5. Presentation and Application

5.1 Prepare the final illustration in high-resolution digital format suitable for display.
5.2 Install or display the artwork in the College of Music Hall at Rangsit University, enhancing the aesthetic environment and inspiring viewers through the harmony of music and visual art.

Techniques and Materials :

  • Use the Pen Tool in Illustrator and Photoshop to create smooth, effective curved lines.
  • Use Photoshop effects to enhance the texture of the ground.
  • Apply gradient colors in Photoshop to add depth to the ground.
  • Use organized layers in Illustrator and Photoshop to maintain good workflow control.
  • Use layer effects in Photoshop to create vibrant aurora colors in the sky.
  • Apply Gaussian Blur to smooth the sky’s color transitions.
  • Use Smart Objects to preserve image quality when resizing until the final stage.
  • Use the Ripple Effect to give the sheet music a soft, flowing, and slightly wavy appearance.

Result / Conclusion :

The creative project “Portrait of Frédéric Chopin (Nocturne Version)” transforms the lyrical and emotional essence of Chopin’s Nocturne in E-flat Major, Op. 9, No. 2 into a visual experience through digital illustration.
