Abstract :

The art project In Pieces explores the fragile state of human identity as it undergoes fragmentation and reconstruction in response to the constant changes of the surrounding world. Originating from personal experiences of emotional disconnection, instability, and adaptation, this work reflects an inner dialogue between what is lost and what remains within the self. As the external environment transforms—through social expectations, technological advancement, and the pressure of modern life—the inner being is forced to evolve, often leaving traces of brokenness that shape a new sense of existence. This project employs mixed media techniques that combine photography, collage, and experimental materials to visualize the process of inner disintegration and renewal. The use of fragmented photographic images, layered textures, and contrasting materials symbolizes the multiplicity of identity and the tension between reality and memory. Each piece serves as both a document and an emotional landscape, revealing the invisible struggles of self-redefinition.
By blending traditional and contemporary media, In Pieces creates a visual narrative that invites viewers to confront their own sense of transformation and vulnerability. The work aims to evoke empathy and introspection, suggesting that fragmentation is not merely a sign of loss but also a vital stage of rebirth and self-awareness. Ultimately, In Pieces is a reflection of how personal chaos and external change intertwine, forming a poetic dialogue between destruction and creation within the human experience.

Objectives :

To explore the impact of external changes on personal identity and emotional stability through the process of artistic creation.
– To express the fragmentation and reconstruction of the inner self using mixed media techniques that merge photography and other visual elements.
– To encourage viewers to reflect on their own experiences of transformation, vulnerability, and self-awareness through visual and emotional engagement

Conceptual Framework :

The conceptual framework of In Pieces is grounded in the relationship between inner fragmentation and external transformation. The work examines how personal identity is influenced and reshaped by environmental, social, and emotional changes. Through the use of mixed media—combining photography, collage, and textural experimentation—the project visualizes the process of breaking and rebuilding the self. Each visual element represents layers of memory, emotion, and adaptation. This framework positions art as a reflective space where personal chaos and reconstruction coexist, revealing the resilience and fluidity of human identity in a constantly changing world. The theoretical foundation of In Pieces is based on the concepts of identity theory and postmodern art discourse. Identity theory explains how individuals continuously reconstruct their sense of self through experiences and interactions with changing environments. Meanwhile, postmodern art emphasizes fragmentation, multiplicity, and reinterpretation of reality—allowing personal narratives to emerge through layered visual forms. This framework supports the idea that identity is not fixed but fluid, and that artistic expression can serve as a transformative process for exploring inner instability and renewal.
This project adopts a qualitative and experimental approach to artistic creation. The process involves collecting personal experiences, emotions, and memories as primary data, then transforming them into visual expressions through mixed media techniques. Photography is used to capture fragments of reality, while collage and layering materials symbolize reconstruction and reinterpretation of the self. The composition process is intuitive yet reflective, allowing emotional states to guide visual form. Documentation and analysis of each creative stage provide insight into the evolving dialogue between personal identity and external change.

Process / Methodology :

Concept Development
Identify the core idea based on personal emotional experiences and the impact of external changes on inner identity. Conduct reflective writing and visual research to define the artistic direction.
– Data Collection & Inspiration
Gather photographic materials, textures, and symbolic elements representing emotional fragmentation and transformation. Explore personal memories and environmental influences as creative references.
– Experimentation with Media
Experiment with mixed media techniques such as photography, collage, layering, and texture manipulation to visualize the process of breaking and reconstructing the self.
– Artwork Composition
Combine selected images and materials into cohesive compositions. Arrange visual elements to express tension, harmony, and emotional depth that reflect the concept of In Pieces.
– Evaluation & Refinement
Review and analyze the aesthetic and conceptual outcomes. Adjust composition, materials, and presentation to enhance the clarity of meaning and emotional resonance of the final work.

Techniques and Materials :

The artwork was created using a black and white photographic technique, with four separate portrait images printed on vinyl canvas. Each image was cut into distinct geometric shapes and layered upon one another to create depth, complexity, and an illusion of dimension. The surfaces were then hand-stitched with thread, incorporating additional tactile qualities and emotional tension. Staples were also used as part of the mixed-media process, adding raw and industrial textures to enhance visual interest. The outer frame was meticulously carved with patterns symbolizing fragmentation and inner disintegration, reflecting the concept of identity breakdown. For the inner fabric frame, a mixture of coffee and water was applied to evoke a sense of aging and the passage of time. This natural tone unites the frame and the artwork itself, harmonizing their textures and meanings into a single, cohesive expression.

Result / Conclusion :

The creation of In Pieces reflects a personal journey of confronting inner fragmentation and rebuilding identity amid constant external change. Through the use of mixed media techniques—integrating photography, collage, and layered materials—the work transforms emotional turbulence into visual expression. The process reveals that breaking apart is not merely an act of loss, but a vital stage of growth and self-understanding. Ultimately, In Pieces communicates the resilience of the human spirit and the beauty that can emerge from imperfection, inviting viewers to reflect on their own transformation and emotional landscapes.
