Reflections of memories after the Tsunami 2024

Abstract :

The creation of the series “Reflections of Memories After the Tsunami 2024” is a reflection on the memories of the 20th anniversary of the Tsunami that occurred in the Andaman Sea of Thailand. I had the opportunity to capture images of the sea gypsy ethnic group who were affected by that event through documentary photography. In this project I want to present their a new story incorporating conceptual photography that allows for a more interpretive approach to the images of past events with greater creative freedom. Simultaneously this body of work seeks to link the events to the ongoing issues of various rights that the community still today, shedding light on their rights within the evolving social context.

Objectives :

1.To present the stories of memories of the sea gypsy ethnic group by conceptual photography.

2.To present the story of the sea gypsy  an experiment in the process of working with Handcoloured silver print photography.

Conceptual Framework :

In creating the series Reflections of memories after the Tsunami 2024. I wanted to present the story of the Sea Gypsy ethnic group which consists of the Moken people and Urak Lawoi people. Them live in the Andaman coast area Krabi, Phang Nga, Phuket provinces. I had the opportunity to go to the area and record their way of life and culture. After the tsunami in 2004 in the work process during that time (2004-2006) I wanted to record their story as a documentary photography . I tell their honest stories in the environment in which they live from traveling and recording images it was found that. They have a way of life, culture and beliefs that are very different from the local people in southern Thailand. It was also found that they are all affected by the exploitation of their rights to life, such as the right to make a living. Right to occupy housing It also includes cultural rights.

A phenomenon that creates a great emotional impact to me. Is their cultural rights being threatened by the tourism industry. Making their rights in other areas they were affected as a result. For me the occurrence of the tsunami event during that time. It is like a tidal wave that reveals the issues. Born in a beautiful beach area in the Andaman Sea of Thailand. At present the problem of rights of the sea gypsy ethnic group has not decreased in any way. This can be seen in the media where news continues to appear that they are continually being invaded by the tourism industry.

In this set of creative works. I wanted to bring stories from documentary photography. Compose and tell a new story under the conceptual photography by Handcoloured and Silver Print techniques. That can create traces and atmosphere in photography. To highlight the problems and oppression of cultural rights of the sea gypsy ethnic group. That continuously exists in Thai society

Process / Methodology :

1. I brought negative film that had been recorded during his fieldwork between 2004 -2006 and selected it to create the work.

2. I took the film that was scratched and edited to give new meaning that show signs of cultural oppression of the sea gypsy ethnic group

3. I takes the film and undergoes an expansion process in a dark room. To get a black and white photograph, then go through a coloring process that can create a somber atmosphere. Which refers to the conditions that the various sea gypsy ethnic groups are currently.

Result / Conclusion :

From the creative work process. I found that contempolary photography is able to reproduce the meaning that the creator intended to express. Problems of the ethnic group. Through the traces of scratches on the film, the seriousness of the issue regarding their rights can be conveyed. While adding color to a black and white image can create a different mood and feeling. It emphasizes the atmosphere and memories that the creators have of phenomena that occurred in the past that are still evident today.
