Abstract :

GRAPHIC DESIGN REFLECTING THAI – MUSLIM IDENTITY
The communication method by Graphic and illustration is a visual language have consistent with traditions, cultures, reflecting the beliefs of the locality and Ethnic. to represent the identity of that group. The profoundness of Graphic and illustration must be able to express the accent according to the owner. To create an identity in a diversity society

The research area is an ancient community of Thai Muslim in recorded history to collect concepts that influence on the Islamic arts and culture of Thai Muslim. By focusing on finding concept and design direction for reflecting identity of Thai Muslims through graphic design.

The Antiques mihrab ( indicates the direction of Mecca/qibla) Chaiya City Style. The Muslim community of Suratthani is older than 100 years ago. The Arts of craftsmanship from local craftsman can reflect the combination of original ethnic and regional art and craft in order that use as archetype to decode the etching patterns.

The output of the research is the graphic design, include Typeface, Graphic element and Illustration can reflecting Thai Muslim Identity With clear, easily recognizable, good design and represents the local. It is an alternative for the designer who needs a job that reflecting Identities of Thai Muslim or applied according to the designer’s objectives.

Objectives :

* To study the graphic design process that can reflecting the personality and identity of Thai Muslims.

* To create a design direction that can enhance communication in Visual communication design to reflect the identity of Muslims in Thailand.

* To develop graphic to reflect identity of Thai Muslim.

Conceptual Framework :

The Framework of this Design research was based on 2 keywords – Islamization: the principles of Islam, the beauty of God.
– Localization: the life and culture in Thailand, the environmental effect.

Process / Methodology :

The research methodologies are Thai Muslims with dynamic roles in Islamic culture were interviewed. In addition, a field survey a lot of mosques in Thailand. Data analysis was based on the concepts behind their image by local lifestyle, culture, construction material and the characteristics of each period.

Techniques and Materials :

  • Silkscreen printing on canvas
  • Embroidery on fabric

Result / Conclusion :

The elements of Thai Islamic Art consist of the principles .of Islam, related to the meaning of Holy Qur’an in the Islamic : Art nity, Respect, Knowledge, Balance, Modesty, and Remembrance.
