This paper outlines the architectural and conceptual design of the Phothalai MICE, a luxurious wedding and convention center in Bangkok. The project’s primary objective was to merge Traditional Thai Design
Philosophy with the functional demands of modern Meeting, Incentive, Convention, and Exhibition (MICE) facilities. The challenge lay in expanding the Phothalai institution, which originates from the esteemed legacy of the “Wat Pho” traditional massage school, into the MICE sector without sacrificing its unique spiritual identity. The architectural design aimed to retain traditional Thai aesthetics while seamlessly integrating contemporary functionality.
The concluded design strategy was “abstraction,” a concept championed by Sathapitanon & Mertens (2005), which advocates for distilling the essence of ‘Thainess’ through elements like light, materials, and form, rather than literal replication. This approach guided the development of the conceptual framework, which balanced three core notions of traditional Thai architecture—Harmony with Nature, Spiritual and Symbolic Meaning, and Symmetry and Balance—with key principles of modern luxury venues, including “Sense of Arrival & Procession,” “Photogenic Spaces,” and “Flexibility & Functionality.” “Water” was adopted as a significant symbolic element, referencing both Phothalai’s original “Spa” business (from the Latin for water) and the legacy of Wat Pho’s location on the Chao Phraya River.
The methodology translated this framework into a unique layout. Drawing on the “Symmetry and Balance” of a traditional Thai house compound, the design features an O-shaped open court with two main conventional wings and a central reception hall. To achieve “Harmony with Nature” and reinforce the “water” legacy, a large shallow pond fills the central court, creating a photogenic focal point. Simplified, abstracted Thai architectural elements, such as roof forms, awnings, and colonnades, are used to evoke cultural identity. The facility’s functions are highly flexible, with multiple rooms adjustable for 50 to 1,000 persons.
As a result, Phothalai Bangkok has become one of the city’s premier event destinations. Its success is quantified by its performance in a recent year, attracting 420 companies, 1,440 meetings, and 365 events, validating the design’s successful synthesis of cultural heritage and modern luxury.
